Flood threat decreases, but still expect rain

DETROIT – Good Friday morning!

I have two good news today.

First, many of us did not have severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. A line of storms formed just south of the state border, and this served as a de facto “wall” that kept some moisture from advancing northward in our region which in turn carried away. significantly reduces the number of thunderstorms that arose.

Yesterday we reported that some computer models were projecting a total of two to three inches of rain Thursday through Saturday morning. Since this total included the torrential downpours we were expected to receive on Thursday afternoon, you will easily understand my second good news: We will have less total rain and therefore a lower risk of flooding.

It’s going to rain again on Friday

While our risk of flooding has weakened, we still expect showers today.

The rain will increase throughout the day, so make sure you have the umbrella handy if you are on the go. If you have tickets to any of the Tigers games today, keep a close eye on the Tigers announcements as both games are under threat.

Most of us will stay in the 60s above near 70 degrees due to clouds, rain, and the 5-10mph east-northeast wind. However, the cold front that happened yesterday stopped just north of a line from Adrian to Monroe, so those of you south of the front will benefit from a few more degrees (and a bit of additional humidity). Meanwhile, those north of I-69 will start the day with some sunshine, before clouds and light showers arrive.

The rain this evening will become lighter and more patchy overnight. Total precipitation from Friday to Friday night appears to be between one and two inches south of Eight Mile Road, three-quarters of an inch to one inch from Eight Mile Road to M-59, with rapidly diminishing amounts north of M- 59.

Ironically, the least amount of rain will fall north of I-69, which is the part of our area that still needs rain – parts of the Thumb are still in moderate to severe drought.

Friday lows will be in the mid-1960s. A northerly wind will move at 3 to 6 mph.

Weekend more pleasant than expected

The computer models differ whether we will start our Saturday with a few light showers or not. Either way, these showers will come to an end and the sun will develop on Saturday morning, first north of I-69, then slowly migrating south.

By the end of Saturday afternoon, most of us should be at least partly cloudy. The highs, as long as we get that sun, should bounce back into the upper 70s. The skies will become predominantly clear on Saturday evening, with lows in the low to the mid-1960s.

It will be quite sunny on Sunday. Some computer models attempt to trigger one or two isolated thunderstorms in the late afternoon. The peaks will continue to warm up until the mid-1980s.
