A church in Jacksonville, Florida held a free vaccination clinic on Sunday after six of its members died from COVID-19.
Impact Church pastor George Davis told Jacksonville-based WJXT on Friday that not all worshipers were vaccinated.
“In the past 10 days, we have had six members of our church who died from COVID. Four of them were under 35 years old. They were all healthy and the only thing they had in common was that they weren’t vaccinated, ”Davis said.
He estimated that between 15 and 20 church members were in the hospital and that at least 10 more were battling the virus at home.
During a Sunday service broadcast live by the church, he mourned the loss of the six members who died from illness, according to CNN.
“It just tore our hearts out. The most recent was actually a young woman from our worship team,” Davis told the congregation.
As a result, the church set up a vaccination clinic where free Pfizer vaccines were offered to those who wanted to be vaccinated. What’s more, medical experts were also there to answer any questions church members might have about the vaccine, Davis said, according to CNN.
“Part of my resolution is that yes, we pray, but we are not just going to pray,” Davis said. “We’re going to pray and do something. And part of our action in this situation is that we have a vaccination event.”
Florida has seen an impressive number of COVID-19 cases and reported its highest number of new single cases since the start of the pandemic at 22,783 on Friday. The worrying wave of new cases has been attributed by health officials to the rapid spread of the delta variant.
About 51% of the state is fully vaccinated, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
