Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers reacted on Thursday against critics of Milwaukee's bid for the Democratic National Convention in Miami, telling his country's newspaper that they were missing the mark by denouncing their chic hotels and restaurants as elites.

"I think the Democrats have an extraordinarily large tent – people from all walks of life – and that Milwaukee is absolutely the best place for them," said Evers laughing at the Sentinel newspaper of the Milwaukee Journal. "If Miami is bragging about being the perfect place for wealthy Democrats, there will not be many."

Evers' comments came after Florida Democrats insider mocked Milwaukee in an article on Miami's speech for organizing the 2020 convention.

While the Wisconsin governor said he was making fun of Miami, the Florida authorities have called his response a "hissy fit".

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, who leads the South Florida area's convention efforts, seemed surprised at the governor's reaction. Even though Evers said the tone of Miami was both wandering and "pretty funny", Gelber said he would not fight back.

"I do not get involved with seizures," said Gelber. "I'm sure Milwaukee is a very beautiful city."

Nevertheless, behind the scenes, Miami has made sure to highlight the superior quality and number of hotels for the 16,000 delegates. Miamians note that just six months before the 2020 congress, the LIV Super Bowl arrives in town.

Milwaukee's supply is more limited. The Miami organizers claim that the city does not have a hotel large enough to accommodate the entire Californian delegation.
