Florida K-9 named after World War II General linked to Nazis

Pro Tip: Before naming your dog, you can do a quick Google search.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office has discovered this the hard way.

Early Friday morning, the LCSO proudly released a photo of its new K-9, a cute 10-week old bloodhound.

"Meet the latest LCSO Bloodhound" read the K-9 post. "Rommel will soon begin his rigorous training to help the community by searching for missing persons, fugitives and evidence. Welcome aboard!"

The eagle-eyed social media users quickly pointed out that the dog bore the same name as Erwin Rommel, a World War II general known as Desert Fox for his surprise attacks.

"Too bad he was named for a Nazi hero," wrote one of them. "I find it offensive to me and the dog. We have many American heroes who gave his name to this beautiful animal.

A few hours later, the LCSO had a new post with the same image.

The legend explained that the agency had abandoned the name of Rommel, which is named after a pet of the master, MP Mark Meintzschel.

"Knowing that this four-legged official belongs to the Lake County taxpayers and his sensitivity to our veterans, [Meintzschel] immediately renamed Scout. Thank you to all those who have drawn our attention to this point and allowed us to correct it immediately. "

Although the majority of people seemed delighted with the return of the bloodhound nickname, a poster wrote worrisively, "I would look in this address if I were you."

A call to the sheriff's office was unanswered Friday afternoon.
