TALLAHASSEE, Florida – A Florida Republican MP is being criticized by his own party for responding to a suggestion that homosexuals be put to death.
Mike Hill's representative had an exchange with voters at a meeting at the Pensacola City Hall last month in which a man said the 1 Corinthians call, in the Bible, called for the killing of a man who was having an affair with another man.
"That also says in the Old Testament," answered Hill.
Another man said, "Can you introduce a bill?"
Hill joined the audience in a chuckle.
"I wonder how it would go?" Hill says, then adding, "OK, enough of that stuff."
The Pensacola News Journal drew attention to these remarks in an editorial last week and published an audio clip. Republicans and Democratic leaders quickly denounced Hill's reaction to comments.
"I am horrified by what I have just heard, no hate can be tolerated, Mike Hill should immediately apologize," wrote on Twitter the President of the Republican Party of Florida, Senator Joe Gruters.
Republican House of Representatives President Jose Oliva and Republican State Representative Chris Sprowls, who wants to become the next speaker, issued a joint statement condemning Hill and demanding an apology.
"We unequivocally condemn both the Hill Hill representative's question and his laughter and his refusal to push back the audience, and remind his audience that it is a good thing." America and that we do not stone people to death, "the statement said. "Such insensitive indifference to a scandalous question is unacceptable."
Hill refuses to apologize. When the Florida Politics news site posted a tweet about these remarks, Hill replied, "Your lynching on social networks is despicable." I never made fun of a murder joke about Gays, and you know it – your trash media has always attacked.
In a separate tweet, Hill said, "No excuses are necessary or appropriate." He said in a local radio show that the coverage of his remarks was "false information".
Hill did not immediately return a message left at his office on Monday nor responded to a Twitter message requesting a comment.
