Florida man saves dog from alligator, smokes cigar all the time

A Florida man rescued his dog in style, grabbing it from the jaws of an alligator without dropping his cigar.

The video of Richard Wilbanks, 74, went viral, showing him jumping into a pond to keep his 3-month-old puppy Gunner away from the alligator.

“We were just walking by the pond,” Wilbanks said, according to People. “It came out of the water like a missile. I never thought an alligator could be so fast. It was so fast.”

Wilbanks said he “automatically” jumped in to save his dog, struggling with the little alligator, which he said wasn’t a problem.

He found it “extremely difficult” to open the alligator’s jaws.

A camera set up by the Florida Wildlife Federation in conjunction with the fStop Foundation captured the incident.

Wilbanks and his wife, Louise, said they appreciated the efforts of the two groups and their campaign, titled “Share the Landscape”.

“It gives us a new appreciation,” Louise Wilbanks told WINK. “We have to be aware that these are wild animals. They are not there for our benefit. We are very lucky to share this space with them.

Wilbanks said he understood he was walking around the alligator’s house and doing just what he needed to survive. He didn’t call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission about the incident because he wanted to leave the alligator alone.

Wilbanks said his hands were “chewed” by the encounter and he had been vaccinated against tetanus just to be safe.

Gunner, meanwhile, had a single prick in his stomach. The puppy recovers well after a visit to the vet.

“I would like to urge people who have pets to make sure they keep them away from the water’s edge,” Wilbanks said.
