Flyers star Jakub Voracek called a reporter a “weasel” in a lively tirade Friday night.
Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Mike Sielski, who criticized Voracek last October, asked the 31-year-old forward if this unprecedented season was any different.
Appearing agitated as Sielski spoke, Voracek buried his head in his hands and replied, “No matter what I say, Mike, you’re going to write shit every time.
His teammate Travis Konecky, who was also on the podium during the video call, almost spit out his drink.
Voracek then said this season had felt “different”, paused and continued to scold Sielski.
“I wasn’t even going to answer your question, you are a weasel, it’s not even funny,” said Voracek, from the Czech Republic. “Next question.”
Both players laughed briefly as another reporter began asking about the Flyers’ 5-2 win over rival Penguins.
Sielski, in an interview with Philadelphia-based website Crossing Broad, suggested that Voracek’s anger may have stemmed from a column he wrote last season when the Flyers were 5-5-. 1 and consequent unbalanced losses.
Sielski wrote that Voracek and his teammate James van Riemsdyk were laughing as head coach Alain Vigneault urged his “best players to lead the way for us”.
He said he apologized and updated the column after the Flyers’ PR department contacted “because they thought I was writing that Voracek and van Riemsdyk were making fun of Alain Vigneault.”
If Voracek was indeed making fun of his coach, Sielski wrote in the updated column: “Well, Vigneault has already left Voracek in the fourth row once this season, and maybe it’s time for a head coach. of the Flyers to point out the limitations of both players. the franchise has for years been considered and treated as essential, ”the other player being captain Claude Giroux.
Sielski, who has been a sports columnist for the Inquirer for seven years, said he offered to “fix the problem” with Voracek.
This apparently never happened.
Voracek tweeted on Saturday that Sielski never contacted him after the incident, “because he knew I was going to crack. Believe me i would like [meet] face to face. It was our first interaction since, ”he said, referring to Friday’s video call.
Media access has declined since March, when last season was suspended due to the coronavirus. Face-to-face interviews have since been prohibited.
Sielski defended himself on Saturday morning after his previous tweets appearing to criticize Voracek resurfaced.

He said it was jokingly written.
“There is no column,” he said. “It’s a ‘joke I make all the time’.
The Flyers entered this season, which started three months later than usual and unlike any other due to the COVID-19 outbreak, as a popular choice to win the Stanley Cup.
Voracek, who is in the fifth year of an eight-year contract worth $ 66 million, had two assists in Friday’s victory.
