Food stamp recipients in Alabama will soon be able to use their benefits to choose and pay for their online purchases.
The US Department of Agriculture today announced the launch of a pilot program that will allow recipients of the Complementary Nutrition Assistance Program to place grocery orders online with Walmart and Amazon. The two-year pilot project will begin in New York, but will expand to Alabama, Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington in the coming months.
Additional retailers are expected to join the pilot program in the coming months, the USDA announced.
"People who benefit from SNAP benefits should have the opportunity to shop in the same way that more and more Americans buy food – ordering and paying for their purchases online," said Sonny Perdue, secretary. to Agriculture. "As technology progresses, it's important that SNAP also advance in order to ensure that the same purchase options are available to non-SNAP and SNAP recipients."
The pilot project will test online orders and payments. SNAP participants will be able to use their benefits to purchase eligible food products, but not service or delivery fees.
Amazon said that food voucher recipients will benefit from free access to its AmazonFresh service, which provides groceries and fresh produce, as well as to Prime Pantry, which offers canned foods and long-life foods in everyday formats.
