For the first time since 2011, Ohio State Football took the field for its annual Saturday Spring match without Urban Meyer as a head coach.
As Ryan Day enters his first year at the helm, he and the Buckeyes will no longer be able to count on Dwayne Haskins' record-breaking effort to open games under the center of Ohio Stadium.
Quarterback Justin Fields appears to be the heir to Ohio State on Saturday as he led Gray to a 35-17 victory over Scarlet on 131 yards and 2 touchdowns during the spring match.
After starting 3-for-10, Fields demonstrated his skill as a playmaker when he unleashed a 98-yard touchdown pass to wide wide receiver Victor Binjimen while it was less than two minutes left to equalize to allow Gray to go up to 21-7.
Redshirt rookie quarterback Matthew Baldwin played for the Scarlet and Gray teams as he took pictures of most of the possessions, scoring 20 of 36 with two touchdowns, two interceptions and one fumble.
One of those scores was an 18-yard dart shot by first-year catcher and five-star rookie Garrett Wilson in the end zone corner to tie 7-7.
Wilson finished with four catches for 44 yards and a touchdown and appeared ready to be part of a receiving center of the Ohio State looking to make up for the 195 receptions lost against Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon and Terry McLaurin.
Redshirt first-year half Master Teague started the scoring on Saturday with a 1-meter touchdown. He showed another lightning in the second half with an intact 22-yard score to allow the Gray team to climb to 35-17.
Teague scored 77 yards rushing with two touchdowns.
With Mike Weber relinquishing his final year of eligibility for the Buckeyes, Teague will likely have more legs to replace Weber's 1,066 yards and six JK Junior JK playoffs. The Dobbins arrive at the fall, which recorded three races for nine yards on Saturday.
Fields showed his speed from his first score as a Buckeye with a five-yard touchdown on a shotgun reading option to give the Gray team a 14-7 record in the second quarter.
The former Georgia quarterback has often turned back against his legs, having only 4 assists in 13 and collecting 38 yards rushing.
Despite Day's "dull sound" rule to prevent injury, the Gray defense was able to generate turnovers in the first half.
Junior Safety Amir Riep selected Matthew Baldwin in the first practice of the second quarter to hold a Gray team touchdown and junior security, Jahsen Wint, intercepted Baldwin and senior quarterback Chris Chugunov at ### 39, a consecutive succession in the last two minutes of the first half.
Ohio State will open its season on August 31 against Florida Atlantic.
