Two weeks ago, Ryan walks was an offensive lineman without a purse who had spent the past three years working in the dark primarily with the Ducks development team.
On the last day of October, Walk’s work ethic and resilience was rewarded with a scholarship. In the opening game of the 2020 season, he made his first career start, guarding Oregon against Stanford.
And on the first day of the new week, Walk was named the Pac-12’s offensive lineman of the week for his play in the Ducks’ 35-14 win over the Cardinal.
“Of course it’s an honor,” Walk said Tuesday, after the Ducks returned to practice to prepare for this week’s game at WSU on Saturday (4 p.m., FOX). “Lots of great players across the country. I’m really grateful to the coaches for preparing me this week; the scout team, they gave us a great look; and the guys I play with, they really facilitate my work.”
Walk made his debut in the same game as one of his roommates, the UO quarterback Tyler shough. In another post-practice interview on Tuesday, Shough admitted that there were times when Walk questioned his future and wondered if he wouldn’t do better to transfer.
“The most important thing for him was that he kept his nose down and continued to work,” said Shough. “He has kept faith in the process, and I’m happy to see that it has paid off for him. He knows there is still work to be done and we are not going to settle for a week.”
Walk grew up attending Oregon games and played for Sheldon High in Eugene. His teammate there, and later with the Ducks, was Justin herbert – from whom Walk heard after Mario cristobal surprised him and linebacker Nate Heaukulani with scholarships after Halloween practice.
In the days leading up to last week’s game opener, Walk was in a heated six-man battle for the five starting positions along the offensive line against Stanford. He ended up earning the right to start and played a lot at both guard positions.
Growing up watching Oregon games from the stands at Autzen Stadium, Walk was now a starter and fellow.
“It wasn’t exactly how I saw it when I was a kid; the stadium was a little empty,” Walk said. “But other than that it was a lot of fun being around the guys and getting the win.”
Practice highlights: Tyler shough and his receivers were locked in for a good-for-good period against the No.1 defense. Shough had finished DJ Johnson, Mycah Pittman and Johnny johnson iii during a series; Steve Stephens IV Johnson came to “thump” pretty well at the end of this game, but Johnson held on. … Jamal Hill hit the ball at the end of a reception, although it has gone out of bounds. …
Jordan happle had a pick-six for a period against the Boy Scouts. It’s a good sign from a guy who could take the field safety start on Saturday Verone McKinley III sits down following his targeting penalty last week. … Camden lewis and Henry katleman each hit a 50-yard basket with the team trying to distract them. Lewis looks like his confidence remains good despite a failure against Stanford, on another kick following a penalty that canceled out a successful attempt.
Other observations: Happle is one of the few defenders who could help replace McKinley. Bennett Williams is another option, although he is also the backup nickel defender. If Williams plays it safe, another nickel option behind Hill could be Dontae Manning, the real first-year cornerback. … Along with Manning, another real rookie who could be in line to make his debut sooner or later is the running back Trey benson. …
Kristian williams continues to play the role of backup defensive tackle while Popo Aumavae is sidelined and continues to impress his coaches. Williams had a solid reputation on Tuesday in an exercise focused on attacking doubles teams, a thankless task to say the least. “I know it sucks”, defensive coordinator Andy Avalos Williams said after a rep, “but it’s a hell of a blow.”
