Football recruiting: Tennessee RB transfer Eric Gray commits to Oklahoma

While the Oklahoma Sooners’ talent at running back was certainly not an issue in the offseason, depth was another matter. Fortunately, OU found an answer in the form of the transfer from Tennessee Eric Gray. The fact that the Memphis native picked the Sooners over Red River rival Texas Longhorns makes the development even smoother.

Gray is the third Tennessee player to choose Norman in recent weeks, joining offensive tackle Wanya Morris and safety Key Lawrence.

Over two seasons in Knoxville, the 5’10, 205-pound Gray rushed for 1,311 yards, including 772 in his second campaign. Versatility is the name of the game for the former four-star prospect, however, as he also contributed 30 receptions for 254 yards last season. He’s nervous and incredibly efficient over short periods of time, and his ability to change direction is one of his greatest strengths. While not necessarily known for his straight-line speed, he is not lacking in this department.

With Kennedy Brooks returning to the fold in 2021, it’s safe to expect the experienced and battle-proven return to be the main bell cow. However, Gray is sure to be no shortage of shots, as his versatility will allow him to be on the pitch with the other fullbacks in OU – whether in the backfield or away. He’s also more than capable of holding position for multiple shots at a time and dealing damage between tackles.

With a backfield from Brooks, Gray, Marcus Major and Seth McGowan, the Sooners now have a capable contributor for every situation and the depth to breathe easily.
