It has now been well over 10 years since the film found Cloverfield brought a giant monster to New York City, the 2008 film then spawned a loosely connected film universe that has so far included the excellent 10 Cloverfield Lane and the not so excellent The Cloverfield Paradox. But what about a real, correct, Cloverfield 2, you ask?

We finally have one, THR reports tonight, as JJ AbramsBad Robot company has hired Joe barton to write the script of what is described as a real Cloverfield after!

THR notes that the Bad Robot / Paramount sequel will not be a found movie. The site also notes, “The details of the take are hidden under Central Park.”

Up to this point, Cloverfield The “sequels” are basically films unrelated to director Matt Reeves’ 2008 film, along with various other films including Suzerain and last year Submarine being * rumor * installments in the universe that turned out not to be. This is how the universe quickly became loose and ill-defined, with The Cloverfield Paradox basically explaining that a tear in the space-time continuum dumped all kinds of monsters in all kinds of different timelines. And, well, that’s been the “Cloverfield franchise” so far, with the follow-up films taking a “it’s not a Cloverfield movie… until it’s… some kind of approach.

But it looks like this time around Bad Robot and Paramount are dedicated to doing a real follow-up of Cloverfield, I hope that with a viral marketing campaign we can get lost.

Stay tuned for more as we learn.
