"The San Diego Pride Festival is in July, so I have not had the opportunity to wear it and take new photos," he told CNN.
Kohli put the picture on Twitter on Saturday, the first day of the month.
"I'm proud to be a bisexual brain scientist in the kitchen," he wrote. "I feel lucky to be able to express all these aspects of my identity and will continue to work to ensure the same freedom for others."
The answer was immediate. He received thousands of retweets, including one that stood out – a former US president.
"You have something to be proud of, Jiwandeep," Barack Obama wrote. "Thank you for everything you do to make this country a bit more equal. The Turban looks great, by the way, a good month of pride, everyone!"
It was Tuesday. A day later, Kohli is still on the moon.
"It was an incredible honor to be recognized by the former president and, honestly, I still treat him," said the doctoral student in clinical psychology. "It left me a little speechless but also reinforced the fact that the picture was worth it."
His tweet continues to accumulate tastes of 126,000 and over. People on Twitter also share messages of support – they like the turban that he himself has designed – and their own stories.
Kohli hopes that his growing platform will allow him to continue to push for social change.
"I will try to stay as visible as possible," he said.
