Ford is delaying hundreds of Mustang Mach-E deliveries to perform “additional quality checks” after delivering a handful of vehicles last year.
Delay of the Ford Mustang Mach-E
Ford officially began deliveries of the Mustang Mach-E last month. This is a milestone for the automaker, given that the Mach-E is Ford’s first vehicle built from the ground up to be electric.
While deliveries started in 2020, the automaker has only delivered a limited number of vehicles and is now expected to start ramping up deliveries in 2021.
However, we have recently received reports from several new buyers who have been informed that their upcoming deliveries, scheduled for the coming weeks, will be delayed.
Some were told they would have to wait up to an extra month, and we received enough reports that we thought it would be useful to check with Ford.
A Ford spokesperson confirmed to Electrek that they have indeed delayed “several hundred Mustang Mach-E models” for additional “quality checks”:
As part of our commitment to delivering high quality vehicles, we are performing additional quality checks on several hundred Mustang Mach-E models built before dealer shipments began last month. We want to make sure they meet the quality that our customers expect and deserve.
The automaker did not specify what motivated these additional quality checks.
Taking Electrek
Last month, we reported that Darren Palmer, Ford’s head of battery-electric vehicles, was casting shade at Tesla over quality issues.
Palmer listed a number of known issues with Tesla vehicles and promised that Ford’s electric vehicles would not have quality issues:
The doors fit together properly, the plastics and other materials are color-matched, the bumpers don’t fall off, the roof won’t come off when washed, the door handles won’t get stuck in cold weather …
If you’re going to be critical, you better make sure your Mustang Mach-Es, especially the early ones, are flawless. Looks like that’s what Ford is doing here.
Unfortunately, this causes delays for early deliveries, but with all eyes on the Mach-E program at the moment, it makes sense to ensure that early deliveries will be very good.
