Ford GT prototype would be tested with a different engine

Evidence is mounting that Ford intends to do something special with the GT. The company would test the supercar with a different powertrain on the streets of Detroit, according to Ford Authority. We may have even seen it before.

Anonymous people who spoke to Ford Authority say the new engine sounds completely different from the GT’s current 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. There aren’t more details on what this powertrain is, however.

Spy shots (above) could have caught this vehicle on the road. It carries a modified rear axle with a large scoop directing air into the engine compartment. There’s a rumor that Ford is pushing the power of the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 to at least 700 horsepower (522 kilowatts) and maybe even over 760 horsepower (567 kW).

Although simply increasing the boost of the current engine doesn’t seem to match the claim that this engine sounds significantly different from the current unit. In a perfect world, we would like to think this rumor means Ford could put a V8 in the GT, but there is no official sign of that at the moment.

This updated GT would also gain fender vents similar to the GT Mk II track car. However, it would not gain the massive wing of the Mk II.

The other changes are not yet clear. However, adjustments to the suspension and brakes seem likely to cope with the extra power.

Ford GT production is slated to end in 2022. Speculation so far is that this updated model would arrive as a big start just before assembly is complete. However, Ford Authority speculates that the Blue Oval could extend the life of the vehicle by building this hotter variant.
