Ford recalls 58,000 Focus and Focus ST models for the second time

Last October, Ford issued a reminder for 1.5 million examples of the 2012-2018 Ford Focus for a problem with its fuel system. While the problem needed to be solved, there is apparently a smaller subset of vehicles that did not solve the problem. That's why, to do this, Ford has launched a second reminder.

Ford said Tuesday it has issued a recall of about 58,000 copies of some Ford Focus vehicles. This second reminder concerns the Ford Focus 2012-2017 with the model I4 with direct injection of 2.0 liters, as well as the Ford Focus ST 2013-2014. The first door has construction dates between October 7, 2010 and July 23, 2012, while the latter has a construction date from May 3, 2012 to December 11, 2014.

According to the manufacturer, the vehicles targeted by this new recall have not received the scheduled software update from the powertrain control module. It is unclear why this specific subset of vehicles has not received the proper update, but it is nevertheless what the second recall seeks to solve.

The problem originated at the origin of the car's can drain valve, part of the feed system that helps to circulate the steam. In the recalled vehicles, this valve could be locked in the open position and the powertrain control module tasked with searching for a blocked valve could have malfunctioned. If both problems occurred, an excessive vacuum could distort the fuel tank, which could cause the fuel gauge to rise or stall the vehicle.

The fix is ​​as simple as before. Dealers will accept the recalled vehicles twice and apply correct software calibration to the powertrain control module. Technicians will also inspect and replace the carbon cartridge, fuel tank and fuel supply module as required. Ford suggests that homeowners leave at least half of a gas tank in their cars until the recall can be made.
