Ford is recalling the Mustang Mach-E for fear that the windshield and panoramic roof could leak or, worse, fly off in an accident or while driving. Nearly 18,000 of the electric SUVs sold to date are at risk from the former, although Ford says only 13,000 of them are at risk of falling off the roof.
The company will begin providing homeowners with recall instructions in late October, and it says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the defect. Ford began recalling Mustang Mach-E SUVs last week in Canada because Electrek reported.
Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this month that it became aware that the Mustang Mach-E’s windshield and panoramic roof may not be properly glued to the car. The company said it did not yet know the cause of the problem.
The recall is just the latest setback in the rollout of the Mustang Mach-E, which is the Detroit automaker’s first mainstream electric car. Ford has recalled dozens of early Mach-Es sold in March after discovering loose subframe bolts. Many of the first deliveries were also delayed, as the company tightened its quality controls. Some of the early vehicles also suffered from a software glitch that resulted in the death of the 12-volt battery because The edge first reported in April.
Panoramic glass roofs have become a popular feature in new electric vehicles, especially after Tesla started making them standard on its cars.
