Forgive Me Father is a hand-drawn old-school FPS with Lovecraft vibes

It’s a crazy world

Do you prefer to be a priest or a journalist? I feel like you probably reluctantly have an answer already, but before locking it down we take a look at this question through the lens of a Lovecraftian nightmare in the upcoming FPS Forgive me father.

You can play either role in the game, and you know what? I hold this cross.

During the weekend, To forgive Me Father appeared on Steam with a trailer and extended pre-alpha footage from 1C Entertainment and developer Byte Barrel.

I know we don’t really suffer for retro-style shooters these days, but I liked the comic book aesthetic enough to want to go deeper into it, and even though Lovecraft is a common inspiration for video games, on some level, I’m inherently just for weird-faced creatures and vague threats of “insanity.” It’s a trope I can’t refuse.

Likewise, in terms of gameplay, Forgive me father isn’t the coolest – expect conveniently placed exploding barrels, pickups of items like health packs and keys, and hordes of trailing wretches that are food for your thundering shotgun . The trailer sold me more than the gameplay preview, which looks pretty straightforward in that “early game area”.

That said, the Steam page gifs are wild – especially that sensitive, slippery blade projectile that’s locked onto the player’s hand. I’m curious to see what kind of buffs the Priest and Journalist can unlock, and how their playstyles can differ depending on what “active skills” you’re going with. We haven’t shown much on this front yet.

The plan is to launch Forgive me father in Q1 2022 on Steam, although that may change depending on how gamers embrace the Early Access version rolled out on October 28, 2021.
