CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former Browns linebacker Joe Schobert might not have much to offer his new team on Sunday when the Jaguars host the Browns.
“The only thing I would personally like (bring to Sunday) is just the personal aspect because I went against the guys,” Schobert told Jaguars media on Wednesday, “but they have a whole new system, a whole new system with the coaching staff who came.
Schobert left the Browns this offseason to sign a 5-year, $ 53.75 million contract with Jacksonville with $ 22.5 million in guarantees. It was believed he could return to Cleveland after GM John Dorsey and the Browns split and Andrew Berry, who was part of the squad that drafted Schobert in the fourth round of the 2016 draft, was hired.
The Browns, however, did not make an offer to retain Schobert, the team’s main tackle for 2017-19 and a Pro Bowler in 2017.
“He’s a guy who’s always into football,” Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said on a conference call with media in Cleveland Wednesday. “We needed a MIKE linebacker. We transferred (Jaguars LB) Myles (Jack) to WILL, which is probably his most natural position. We thought we were getting a very good production. “
Marrone praised Schobert for many of the things that made him effective during his time in Cleveland.
“A guy who works hard, comes here every day and plays through little bumps and bruises,” said Marrone, “and that’s something I think we all appreciate from all the players who do that. “
“He’s a guy who obviously is a smart player,” said Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. “He always has guys lined up and in the right places at the right times. I can’t wait to play him, but our terminology is different now, so it won’t be the same for him.
So in that case, all of the revenue within the organization might actually help the Browns.
“Other than the staff and the players and their behavior and playing against them for four years,” said Schobert, “I don’t have a lot of ins and outs of the current offensive pattern and jargon or jargon that they might use. . “
Stretch the truth
Player Schobert has said he wants to strike on Sunday when he takes on his former team that might surprise you: running back Nick Chubb.
His response, of course, was accompanied by a big smile at the end.
“I think he just has a reputation for being a good guy, but Nick is the worst,” said Schobert unmoved. “People don’t know that about him. He’s the worst person. He’s always stolen my stretch (from Browns assistant strength and conditioning coach) Dale Jones. Eventually, the two will meet on Sunday. It’s inevitable. It won’t be the first time either.
“The last couple of years we’ve been (able to hit in practice),” Schobert said. “We had live practice every day and Nick was just a young man, so I was able to attack him a few times. Even though I was yelled at last year for tackling him because I tackled his legs, so that’s another sticking point.
Chubb, for his part, was asked about his former teammate on Sunday.
“It will be fun,” he says. “I look forward to this.”
