The former leader of the Democratic majority for the California State Senate Gloria Romero endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder in a campaign video.

“Our public schools need big changes. I am Gloria Romero; I was the leader of the Democrat Majority in the State Senate. I believe in charter schools and school choice. Larry Elder too, but not Gavin Newsom. He closed our public schools while he was sending his kids to private schools, “Romero said in a video posted by the Elder Campaign.

“Yes: I am a Democrat. But Newsom’s recall does not concern the political party. It is Newsom. Larry Elder for the governor,” she adds.

Romero was leader of the Democratic majority in the state Senate from 2001 to 2008, when she stepped down to become chair of the education committee.

Elder is currently leading the group of Republican candidates seeking to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom in the September 14 recall election.
