Mike Laidlaw is a name you probably see popping up from time to time.

This is because he was the lead designer on Dragon Age: Origins and supervised the whole Dragon age series; and he has also participated in several BioWare classics like Jade empire. But in 2017, Laidlaw left BioWare several years before his name became stained with Anthem and just after the tumultuous launch of Mass Effect: Andromeda. He was gone at a good time, but now we finally know what he did. Enter Yellow Brick Games.

Announced today with a site describing what it is, Laidlaw is partnering with several other key developers from studios such as Ubisoft, with a mission to “deliver innovative and emerging gameplay designed by a small, highly skilled team” . Seemingly out of AAA gaming, Laidlaw’s studio “strongly believes in creating digital playgrounds. The more interactivity and freedom a game can offer a player, the more immersive and compelling it can be, provided it there are clear rules that guide these interactions. “

Laidlaw is one of the four founders of the studio, with Frédéric St-Laurent B, Jeff Skalski and Thomas Giroux: they are based in Quebec and are currently hiring. Like many older AAA studios, this is another to put on your “wait and see” list. So many developers are fed up with the way conglomerates like EA and Activision do business, so hopefully this expanded creative freedom will lead to good things for everyone.
