Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb said he believed it was “inevitable that the COVID-19 vaccine will be included in the childhood immunization schedule” in an interview on CBS “Face The Nation” Sunday.
As Insider reported, the FDA may clear the vaccine for young children aged 5 to 11 by the holidays. In late August, the agency gave the green light to doses for people 16 years of age and older, and still available under emergency use authorization for children 12 to 15 years old, according to the FDA website.
“You’re going to see other states and local districts come forward with their own mandates,” Gottlieb added. “And I think the right place for decision-making around these mandates is at the local level. So you’re going to see other states like California taking care of it.”
Last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a mandate requiring students to receive the injections, adding to a “well-established list that currently includes 10 vaccines.” Dr Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, said he agreed with Newsom’s decision.
However, other officials, for example, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis oppose the implementation of the vaccination mandates.
During the interview, moderator Margaret Brennan asked Gottlieb about his concerns about the politicization of vaccines.
“I worry about the consequences of the moment we find ourselves in. The fact that now vaccination is something that divides us culturally and politically … I think it’s going to have broader implications than just around COVID. I fear that in the future we will see vaccination rates drop as it becomes more of political football, ”he said.
