Jeff Immelt told CNBC on Monday that his perception of his time as CEO of General Electric was unfair and incomplete.
“I am totally unhappy with the narrative that has been created,” Immelt said in an interview with CNBC’s David Faber.
“I don’t think it’s complete. I don’t think it’s fair. And I think it hurt a lot of people,” Immelt said, while explaining why he wrote a book about his tenure as the head. of the industrial giant.
Immelt’s book, “Hot Seat,” is scheduled for release on Tuesday. The publisher describes the book as a “questioning of himself and his mandate”, detailing “his proudest moments and his biggest mistakes.”
“All leadership is crisis leadership. And I think to a certain extent this team, I, have been through a lot together that others can learn from, ”he said. “I wanted to share that too.”
When Immelt took over then-CEO Jack Welch from GE in 2001, the stock was already turning around, as the dot-com bubble of the 1990s burst and also lowered the stock market as a whole. . Immelt guided GE following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the terrorist attacks and the financial crisis of 2008.
Immelt has been criticized by critics for poor leadership decisions as CEOs that have left GE strapped for cash. Coming out of the gate in 2017, Immelt found himself defending the company’s practice of having his business jet followed by an empty business jet on multiple trips around the world.
John Flannery, who is looking for Immelt, was then ousted from the top post after just 14 months. Flannery was replaced on October 1, 2018 by Larry Culp, who had served on GE’s board of directors since April. Culp was previously CEO of Danaher from 2000 to 2014.
Culp is executing a turnaround at GE.
