Former Google chief Eric Schmidt leaves the Alphabet Board of Directors

Schmidt, who joined Google as CEO in 2001, has slowly moved out of the company in recent years. He left his position as Executive Chairman of the Alphabet Board of Directors in 2017, choosing to devote his time to charity work through his family foundation. Schmidt's departure from Alphabet's board comes just as the company announced it was not meeting its profit targets. Last month, the European Union fined Google $ 1.7 billion for abusive advertising practices.

Diane Greene, who has been CEO of Google Cloud until her replacement with a former Oracle executive in January, will also leave the board this summer. Greene, who advocated for the controversial Project Maven project, stepped down as CEO of Google Cloud after almost four years of service in November. Alphabet also announced that Robin L. Washington, current executive vice president and chief financial officer of Gilead Sciences, would join the board.
