An Intel engineer who left the company for Microsoft last year admitted to taking confidential Intel documents with him and agreed to work it out with the chipmaker.
Oregon engineer Varun Gupta spent 10 years working for Intel, most recently in its data center group, before leaving for Microsoft in January 2020. Intel sued him in February, alleging that Gupta had loaded “confidential” and “top secret” Intel documents onto portable storage. devices before leaving his old job. Intel said it then accessed the information from its Microsoft-provided laptop.
In court documents filed this month, Gupta admits taking the documents after accepting the job at Microsoft and accepting “a confidential settlement payment” to Intel. Each party will pay its own legal fees, according to the settlement, and if Gupta violates the terms of the agreement, it will have to pay at least an additional $ 100,000.
Courtney Angeli, Gupta’s attorney in Portland, said Tuesday he was unavailable for comment. She did not respond to a request to see if Gupta still works for Microsoft, and Microsoft did not immediately respond to a message about her employment status.
Intel’s initial complaint indicated that Intel’s marketers and engineers were wary that he might have taken trade secrets after negotiating with him in his new role at Microsoft. The litigation noted that Microsoft had assisted in Intel’s investigation into the matter.
Intel declined to comment on the resolution of the case on Tuesday. In February, the company said, “We have great confidence in our current and former employees, but we have an obligation to protect our intellectual property and other proprietary information, and we will not hesitate to act to prevent their misappropriation.
