A hunter's bullet may have accidentally struck and killed a woman and a college athlete while driving on an Iowa highway in the middle of the night over the weekend.
Police said the bullet had broken the glass of the driver of Micalla Rettinger's 25-year-old car Sunday on Highway 218 in Waterloo, hitting her at the back of the neck and killing her.
The bullet also touched his 32-year-old boyfriend Adam Kimball in the face, wounding him, according to the police and the Des Moines registry.

A third person in the car was not injured.
Micalla Rettinger, 25, was hit by a bullet and was killed while driving on an Iowa highway early Sunday morning with her boyfriend and a third person.

Investigators ruled out road rage as the reason for Rettinger's death.
"This was one of the first things we looked at: it was whether these people were involved in a conflict or something that had happened before," said Major Joe Leibold of the Waterloo police, according to KWWL-TV.
"The passenger said that there was nothing like it," he said. "They just quit their job and came here. There was not a lot of traffic. So, they did not cut anything, nothing happened to the passenger in the vehicle. They just left work and drove home, nothing unusual caught their attention.

The shooting took place around 2:30 in the morning, one could suppose that the shooter could be a person who was hunting illegally, reported the station.
Police on Monday called on the public to help "locate anyone likely to be involved in shooting or hunting activities (legal or illegal) in the Cedar River area between Highway 218 Bridge and the Conger Ave Bridge ".
The call also included the owners of surveillance cameras and surveillance.
According to KWWL, it was also possible that the bullet came from a person firing a firearm at random.
Rettinger graduated from the University of Northern Iowa where she was part of the softball team. She received the honors of the conference during her junior and senior years.

"On Sunday morning, we lost a member of the Panther family, and we are shocked to learn of the senseless death of Micalla Rettinger," said athletics director David Harris. "This news is heartbreaking for our softball team, UNI Athletics and the entire campus."
