Former LSU tight end Arik Gilbert announced on Sunday that he was entering the transfer portal four weeks after joining Florida.
Gilbert, a 5-star rookie and one of the best players in the recruiting class of 2020, a native of the LSU team in early December and entered the NCAA transfer portal on January 2. 368 yards and two touchdowns in eight games at LSU last fall before announcing on Dec. 9 that he was “retiring” from the rest of the season.
The 6-foot-5, 253-pound Gilbert looked set to play this fall in Florida before suddenly reversing his course on Sunday. He has not announced any future destination.
“I have decided to opt out of the University of Florida and return to the portal,” Gilbert wrote on Twitter. “I will not announce my final decision until I am enrolled in school and on campus.”
In Florida, Gilbert was set to replace All-America tight end Kyle Pitts last season, who caught 43 passes for 770 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2020. Pitts announced after the SEC Championship game that he was entering the 2021 NFL Draft, in which he is expected to be a first-round first pick.
