Former NFL star obtains pre-approval for marijuana clinic for medical purposes in Michigan

Former recipient of the Detroit Lions, Calvin Johnson, has received preliminary authorization to open a marijuana clinic for medical purposes in Michigan.

Johnson has received unanimous prior approval to open the company with his wife, Brittney Johnson, reported on Thursday the Detroit Free Press.

This is Johnson's second attempt to obtain a license for a marijuana business for medical purposes, according to the newspaper. In December, Johnson and his then partner, Robert Sims, were denied licenses for unpaid traffic tickets issued to Johnson more than a decade earlier.

Since then, Johnson has been handling the unpaid bills, according to the newspaper, prompting the state's Medical Marijuana Licensing Board to approve the new application.

"Calvin is grateful and is looking forward to using his Primitive brand in this new venture," Johnson's attorney Michael Stein told The Free Press. "He hopes to have a great presence in the state."

The location of the clinic has not yet been determined, but will operate under the Michigan Community Collective name. The Johnson Company must be approved by the community they want to open before they can get a license.

Johnson and Sims, also a former Lions player, appealed their December rejection.

Marijuana for medical purposes has been legal in Michigan since 2008. The Michiganders voted in November to legalize the recreational pot.
