Miami continues to strengthen its lineup through high level transfers, receiving a commitment from the No. 1 prospect of the 2017 recruiting class, former UCLA defender Jaelan Phillips.

A concussion forced Phillips to withdraw from the game after four games in 2018 and in December, it became apparent that the former All-American high school student could withdraw completely from football. Instead, Phillips continued his career via the transfer portal, with the option of requesting a medical waiver granting him immediate eligibility since he had played only four games last season.
Phillips is an elite sports prospect with the ability to play the defensive top position that has become so coveted at the next level. In December, before the retirement of Mark Richt and the hiring of Manny Diaz, Miami had experienced setbacks. But the level of talent in the lineup has been greatly enhanced by the recruitment that Diaz and his staff have achieved with transfer goals.
Phillips enters a transfer class for Canes that includes the former Ohio State Quarterback, Tate Martell, the former Auburn halfback, Asa Martin, the former USC security player, Bubba Bolden, formerly of the Virginia Tech defense team, Trevon Hill, and the former defensive striker of the USC.
