Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang announces New York mayoral race

NEW YORK (WABC) – Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang has announced he is running for mayor of New York.

On Wednesday evening, Yang posted a YouTube video titled “Why am I running for town hall.”

The video says:

“I moved to New York 25 years ago. I came of age, fell in love and became a father here. Seeing our city as it is now breaks my heart. What we will do in the months ahead will determine our city’s trajectory for decades.

I’m running for mayor because I see a crisis – and I believe I can help.

We must launch the largest basic income program in history, invest in a people-centered economy, return to evidence-based governance, and create an accessible health system. We must do all of this by embracing responsible and smart policing, building affordable housing, bridging our city’s digital divide, modernizing urban transportation and services, and more. We will move New York forward – together.

The Democratic primary takes place on June 22, 2021. I look forward to you joining us in our campaign to revive and rebuild our city. “

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams also threw his hat in the ring for the mayor of New York. Other possible names for the job include former Blasio chief counsel Maya Wiley, former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, former Bloomberg and Obama administration member Shaun Donovan, the former nonprofit executive Dianne Morales, former Veterans Services Commissioner Loree Sutton and former Citigroup executive Ray McGuire.

Yang, an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, is said to be just the second Asian-American candidate to run for mayor and be on the ballot.
JP Morgan executive Arthur Chang is also planning to introduce himself.

In 2013, New York State Senator John Liu was running for mayoralty in New York, instead of running for re-election as comptroller.
