The former Boston Red Sox hitter, David Ortiz, was killed Sunday in an outdoor bar in Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital. He would be in a stable state after having been operated on.

Ortiz, a native of the Dominican Republic, was at the bar of the capital around 20:50. when a motorcycle man approached and shot him from behind, according to the director of the Dominican National Police, Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte.

Ortiz's father, Leo, told local reporters that his 43-year-old son was "well" after the operation and that the bullet had not touched any vital organs.

"He is out of surgery and stable, he is resting," said Leo Ortiz. "Big Papi will be around for a long time."

Dominican TV host Jhoel Lopez and another person were also injured during the attack, according to the Associated Press. Lopez was shot in the leg, but his injuries were not considered a death threat.

Bautista said that the alleged gunman had been captured and beaten by a mob and that he was under treatment before being interrogated by the authorities.

The Dial Bar and Lounge, where the assault took place, is located in the eastern part of the capital, in a nearby neighborhood known for its upscale dance clubs, according to the AP.

Ortiz, who helped the Red Sox win the World Series three times, has hit 541 home runs in his 20-year career. He won the MVP award in 2013 and retired after the 2016 season.
