Former San Francisco 49ers tight end Greg Clark died on Friday at the age of 49.

Clark’s family released a statement that says the four-year NFL veteran and Stanford alumnus recently suffered from symptoms of CTE:

It is with great sadness that we announce this unexpected death. of Greg Clark, 49, husband, father, son, brother and dear friend of so many. Greg was a dedicated family man who was successful in everything he did, from his academic and athletic accomplishments as a Stanford varsity athlete, to his role as a winger for the San Francisco 49ers, to creating the ‘a successful real estate platform across the Bay Area. . Most importantly, he was a cherished and devoted father of three sons and a loving husband to his wife for 23 years. His recent suffering from the symptoms of CTE cannot extinguish the magnitude of his impact on us and others and we are forever grateful for the time we spent with him. We hope that through further research we can gain more knowledge about CTE.

Our organization is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Greg Clark. … Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Clark played two years of football at Stanford before becoming a third-round draft pick for the 49ers in the 1997 draft. He spent his entire four years. career in San Francisco and had 92 receptions for 909 yards and four touchdowns in 55 games.
