Big tennis champion Martina Navratilova, a gay rights defender, has been criticized for a column in a British newspaper in which she said that allowing transgender women to compete in women's sports events is nonsensical and misleading.
Navratilova wrote the column in The Independent newspaper in response to the fallout from a December tweet that said, "You can not just proclaim yourself a woman and compete with women. There must be certain standards, and having a penis and competing as a woman would not fit that standard. "
She reportedly said that she would do research on the subject, but said her previous views "have strengthened."
"It's crazy and it's cheating," she wrote. "I'm happy to talk to a transgender woman in the form she prefers, but I would not be happy to compete with her. It would not be fair.
Some have described his transphobic column. The Guardian reported that Rachel McKinnon, who was the first transgender woman to win the world cycling title, issued a statement to the newspaper calling the column "disturbing".
Navratilova called her criticism and what she saw as "a growing tendency for transgender activists to denounce anyone who defended them".
