Fort Bragg soldier accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend, shooting her while driving car

A soldier stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina was arrested Thursday and charged with murder for allegedly shooting his pregnant girlfriend while driving on a highway in Georgia.

Akeila Ware, who was 33 weeks pregnant, drove as Alonzo Dargan Jr. followed her in another car on Tuesday, said Captain Kelli Ellington, of the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.

Dargan, 30, took Ware – pregnant with her child – off the road and was fired behind the wheel of a Nissan Altima, Ellington said at a press conference on Friday.

“She was wrecked. She was shot while the car was moving, ”Ellington said. Dargan was arrested Thursday evening by the military, Ellington said. He is charged with murder, feticide – or the death of an unborn child – and possession of a firearm while committing a crime, she said.

Ware’s mother Twila Ware said her daughter’s shooting was surreal, NBC affiliate WRAL reported in Raleigh.

“Looks like it’s just a dream, like you’re going to wake up from it,” she said. The media also reported that Akeila Ware was a nurse.

Neither Ware nor Dargan’s relatives could be reached on Friday.

Troup County Sheriff James Woodroof offered his condolences to Ware’s family at the press conference. He said that when authorities first arrived in Ware’s vehicle, they believed they were responding to a car accident. But “it turned out to be murder,” he said.

Woodroof called Dargan’s alleged actions a “horrific crime”. He also credited Ellington’s investigative team with working around the clock to make an arrest quickly.

Ellington said investigators found evidence that the suspect’s vehicle was a silver Nissan. They also learned that Ware was in a relationship with Dargan, a soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, who owned a silver Nissan Altima.

“Other evidence we found placed him in Troup County at the time of the murder,” she said.

Dargan grew up in Troup County, about 70 miles south of Atlanta, and had previously attended school with Ware, Ellington said.

Dargan, who was married to another woman, was not the father of Ware’s other five children, Ellington said.

He was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center in North Carolina. Dargan was to stay there until his extradition to Troup County, Ellington said.

Detention center records on Friday afternoon showed Dargan was being held on a fugitive from justice outside of Georgia.
