A bar in downtown Fort Lauderdale has announced it will close again due to the recent increase in coronavirus cases in Florida – two days after reopening.
In an Instagram post on Sunday, the Fort Lauderdale Wharf said it would “close,” citing the peak in statewide coronavirus cases and local social distancing measures.
“We will reopen when we are able to provide the appropriate experience for [customers] in our beautiful outdoor room, ”reads the bar’s post.
In a statement, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Steve Geller said he was satisfied with the wharf’s decision. According to the mayor, the bar was creating a mass-market event, serving people who did not wear masks.
“All businesses are responsible for what goes on in their business, and bars are heavily regulated by state and local authorities. If brawls break out in a bar or if people are too drunk, the owners would have the security of keeping offenders away. If the drugs are sold openly in a nightclub, the owner cannot say he is not responsible because they tried to stop the illegal activity and people refused, ”the statement said.
“Bars and other business owners need to understand that they need to enforce our emergency orders.”
Broward County surpassed 100,000 cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, according to the Florida Department of Health. The total number of cases in the state reached 931,827 on the same day.
In addition to Broward’s 100,288 cases, 1,618 virus-related deaths were also reported in the county on Saturday.
