Fortnite and Apex Legends Power Twitch at 2.7 Billion Hours Observed in the First Quarter of 2019

Twitch remains the destination of choice for watching live video. According to a new report from streaming services company StreamElements and the company's Stream Hatchet analysis, users watched 2.7 billion hours of content on Twitch in the first quarter of 2019, an increase of 35% compared to the first quarter of 2018.

But his rivals have also seen a sharp increase. The Microsoft mixer has gone from 22 million hours viewed in the first quarter of 2018 to 89 million this year. And the number of YouTube Live has doubled to 722.5 million.

As for the Twitch games, Fortnite was at the top of the list of the most watched videos despite a new competition, with 311.7 million hours. Fellow of the Royal Battle, Apex Legends debuted on the live broadcast platform when it was released in February, recording an average of 40 million viewing hours a week, surpassing Fortnite for a time.

But that number dropped to 10 million in March when major broadcasters moved away from Apex Legends to play other games. In total, Respawn's shooter finished the first quarter with a total of 182.7 million hours watched, just behind League of Legends (302.4 million).

Coincidentally, the research company Newzoo today released a similar study on the state of live broadcasting. However, these results are slightly different, spelling Apex Legends at 180 million hours watched and Fortnite at 304 million euros for the first quarter. This is probably due to the different methodologies used in the respective reports and reflects the huge amount of data that companies must process to achieve these results.
