Fortnite Developer Epic Games is moving its headquarters from Cary, North Carolina, across town to a large mall, the company said. He plans to convert the 87-acre Cary Towne Center into his new home port by 2024.
Once development is complete, Epic says the site will include leisure and office space, “customized from the ground up to accommodate its long-term growth.”
The company says it plans to begin development at the new headquarters site this year. Epic bought the property from Turnbridge Equities and Denali Properties, who bought it in January 2019 in a troubled sale after the mall lost three of its top tenants, according to the Triangle business journal. Turnbridge and Denali planned to turn the site into a mixed-use development called Carolina Yards.
Epic’s plans to develop the property include the demolition of some of the existing structures at the site, a spokesperson said in an email to The edge, but the company did not provide further details. saying the plans are still in their early stages. Until the new headquarters are ready, Epic will continue to operate from its current offices at Crossroads Boulevard in Cary, about three miles away.
Epic raised $ 1.78 billion in a funding round last summer and has a valuation of around $ 17.3 billion. And while the company is still involved in an ongoing legal battle with Apple over fees in the App Store, Epic’s Fortnite remained extremely popular in 2020, with over 350 million registered players in May.
