The February members-only character is Fox Clan Member Vi – Fortnite’s new name for its various characters wearing Kitsune masks such as the OG season five mascot and fan favorite Drift.

The Vi set includes the usual character skin, bling back, and pickaxe, now all with two detailed styles. There’s also an envelope (weapon skin) and loading screen – new items not included in previous monthly deals.

Vi’s revelation was teased yesterday afternoon via a series of bizarre social media posts and a fake takeover of the game’s official Twitter – which were then erased from existence (again, all of this does part of the game story).

The previous narrative clips posted to the Fortnite account come from the in-game character Jonesy, who works for the IO agency. But a later note from IO suggested it wasn’t the sender or the mysterious evil mentioned. “If more updates on this mysterious Fox clan are received, we will continue to post and study them,” read another now-deleted post.

During the Twitter account takeover, its background was temporarily changed to this image showing Vi alongside former members of the Fox Drift and Catalyst clan. The location here looks a lot like Lucky Landing from the old Fortnite map – which some fans say will be the last returning location this season:

Of course, this all serves to sell Fortnite’s £ 9.99 subscription for an additional month. Two weeks ago developer Epic Games admitted that it had more work to do to “make your membership even better” after a lukewarm reception at Green Arrow’s connection in January.

The mere suggestion that a new Drift-esque skin would be released was enough to get many fans of the character excited (Fortnite also released a beachwear version of the character named Summer Drift and, more recently, Snow Drift, an icy variant). Pack a few extra items and whether or not you think it’s worth the asking price, it’s definitely a more tempting offer.

At the end of another long season, it looked like the February deal had to be better to keep members subscribed. March, meanwhile, will be a lot easier to sell as it will bring a new season, one of which the battle pass will be unlocked for all with Fortnite Crew membership.
