Fortnite season 8 is about cubes

The alien invasion is over, and now FortniteThe island of is … full of cubes. Season 8 of the second chapter of the battle royale has just launched and it’s called simply “Cubed”. The premise is quite strange: According to developer Epic, the cubes that powered the giant alien mothership have now been released to wreak havoc on the island. As with all new seasons, the update means a combination of new characters, locations, weapons, and even portals to transport players to a kingdom filled with monsters. The launch follows an explosive live event that took place over the weekend.

First up, here’s the basic story, via Epic:

The alien and IO war is over, but a new war has taken shape, one where you are a fighter. After Slone overtook you and left you to perish on the mothership, the cubes that powered him are now free. These things are a greater threat to the island than these aliens could ever have been. They have no face, no speech, but they are sensitive and have six sides of wickedness.

If you think the corruption they caused is bad now, you have no idea what can happen if we let them trample all over the island. It doesn’t matter if you are pro-alien or pro-IO, it will take all the help we can get to keep the island from falling. It’s up to everyone, including you, to take my information below and use it wisely.

The cubes also seem to be sensitive now, which is fun.

(A long time Fortnite fans will recall that cubes have always been a big part of the game’s lore, dating back to when Kevin rolled around the original island in 2018 before melting away.)

The biggest change in Chapter 8 seems to be a new item called “The Sideways,” which is described as a “dark, evil, monster-filled reality” that spreads through cubes. Players can access it through portals – besides monsters, it features low gravity and no buildings – and it will impact different locations on the island. Players will be able to obtain a new crafting component in these areas to create overpowered “side” weapons. This season is also bringing back classic weapons, including the Automatic Sniper Rifle and the Harpoon Gun.

There also appears to be a new emphasis on collaboration between players, who can now work together to enforce the island. Here’s how Epic describes it: “Along with other Loopers across the island, donate the bars you earn to construction sites where you want to see turret stations built. Going forward, we’ll need you to get together and decide which new weapons to develop, which to unlock, and more.

Finally, a new season means a new battle pass to purchase, and this time around, that includes the addition of unlockable characters like Carnage, a monster hunter called Torin, and a soldier named JB Chimpanski. Also, a buff unicorn called Fabio Sparklemane. Just look at this guy.

Season 7 debuted in June, and aside from the introduction of aliens, it’s been pretty eventful, adding a new Among us-fashion style, an Ariana Grande concert and characters ranging from Loki to LeBron James.
