Four people died amid riots on the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC on Wednesday, Police Chief Robert Contee said, as a horde of supporters of President Donald Trump sought to prevent confirmation of Joe’s election victory Biden.

The deaths included a woman who was shot, as well as another woman and two men who died from “medical emergencies,” said Contee, who spoke during a press conference Wednesday evening.

The chief said the internal affairs division was investigating the shooting. Contee said they were still working out the exact details of the other three deaths.

At least fourteen police officers were injured and several are still in hospital, Contee said. A policeman was seriously injured while being dragged into a crowd where he was assaulted, he added.

“This is a tragic incident and I extend my condolences to the family and friends of the victims,” Contee said.

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a 6 p.m. curfew Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. The mayor also declared an extension of a “public emergency” for the next 15 days, which would pass through the day of the inauguration.
