LAS VEGAS – It was certainly not without controversy, but JP Buys (9-2) secured a first-round stoppage victory over Jacob Silva (6-4).
The contest served as the featured bout in Dana White’s Contender Series 36, which aired live on ESPN + from UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.
Buys was able to lead the fight on the ground in a fast fashion, showing great speed after being knocked off balance with a low kick. The withdrawal was in the middle of the cage, but Buys managed to secure the top spot and start looking for options. Purchases briefly watched take the mount but had to settle for a sideways check. Then when Silva resisted and looked like he almost pulled a sweep, Buys was able to step back and tease the back. Silva countered with a roll, but Buys locked himself in an arm-triangle choke that seemed destined to end the fight – without an absolutely brave effort from Silva, who was able to turn and create a space where he seems like it just wasn’t exist.
The problem didn’t end there, as Buys locked himself in a deep guillotine choke as time passed. With Buys ripping on the neck, referee Marc Goddard stepped in to abandon the fight with six seconds left in the first round. With Silva’s face blocked, Goddard’s decision was difficult, though he ultimately stood it, even with Silva’s immediate protest.
Despite the odd ending, Buys won a UFC contract.
In a heavyweight clash, Nick Maximov (6-0) kept his perfect record unblemished, although climbing one division and facing a 54-pound weight gap made it difficult against Oscar Cota (11 -3).
Maximov wasted little time bringing the action to the ground, shooting immediately at the start of the contest and scoring the out. Cota eventually turned to his knees, where Maximov began unleashing punches that scored. Cota gutted it out and was able to get to his feet, then spread out well when Maximov immediately sought to shoot again. Cota couldn’t do much with the control he had gained, but he was able to keep his weight on his enemy until the bell.
After a pair of exchanged kicks to start the second, Maximov shot forward. Cota pissed him off, but surprisingly enough decided to come back for a guillotine. This failed and Maximov happily settled in first position. Working from his opponent’s half-guard, Maximov stayed just busy enough to hold onto position with short punches and brief teases during potential positional advances, but still cautious to maintain his dominance.
Maximov pushed his way through another out to start the final round, and Cota was flat on his back again. Maximov did his best to try and set up an arm triangle, but he had to focus on keeping his much taller opponent on the ground. It was effective, but not necessarily exciting, and Maximov managed to fight his way to a decision victory, 30-26, 30-26 and 29-28.
UFC President Dana White declined to offer Maximov a UFC contract, but said he would offer him to join the next season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”
In strawweight action, Brazilian Gloria de Paula (5-2) was able to beat judoka Pauline Macias (4-1) and stay clear of any bad position on the way to a dominant decision victory.
It was from Paula with a smooth strike to start, although Macias was able to squeeze under and catch a clinch early. As she searched for a withdrawal, de Paula teased a guillotine, forcing Macias to pause and adjust and land a small, smooth bang on the canvas. However, she couldn’t capitalize on the position, and the two got back on their feet. Once there, de Paula showed impressive defense and managed to lock a stranglehold attempt forward. Macias defended himself well and looked almost annoyed as several minutes passed, but de Paula refused to let go of the choke, holding him up to the bell.
It was Paula again with the fierce strikes to start the second and Macias looking to enter. Straight punches and quick kicks landed De Paula aside, and she scored with tight elbows and knees. Macias got a putout but couldn’t keep the fight on the ground, and a guard shot later turned on him, with de Paula landing several big shots from the dominant position.
Clearly on the cards, Macias came out pulling some heavy shots, but de Paula was able to clinch and lead the action towards the fence, pressing down firmly with her head in the center. With the position a bit deadlocked, de Paula stepped back and landed a big elbow as she pulled away. Macias kept looking for scraps that were ruled out, and de Paula punished her with beating all over the place while she was on her feet. Macias passed out late, but refused to stop and Paula had to settle for an impressive decision win, 30-26 on all three cards.
However, the victory was enough to get Paula a UFC contract.
In a lightweight bout between fighters returning to Dana White’s Contender Series, Tucker Lutz (11-1) claimed his 11th straight victory scoring a dominant decision victory over previously undefeated Sherrard Blackledge (5-1).
After a brief feeling process to begin with, the combat switched to melee, and it was Blackledge who finally scored a brief withdrawal from melee work. Lutz got back to his feet quickly, but Blackledge also took advantage of every available opportunity to work with short punches and elbows as well. As the knees were swapped on the inside, Blackledge landed in the groin and Lutz took a brief break. On the restart, Blackledge also landed a kick in the groin, and another time out followed.
Late in the frame, Lutz had some success with some big leg kicks before shooting in and landing the teardown he wanted. Blackledge briefly teased a guillotine, but had to let go of it and tried to stand up, allowing Lutz to take his back to the bell.
The pair traded sharp strikes to open the second, but after Blackledge stepped forward and insisted on a takedown, it was Lutz who was able to take advantage of the clinch and slide back as the action sounded. the Web. Blackledge whirled around inside and stood, but he couldn’t make space, and Lutz grabbed a sash and dropped to the floor. Despite the bad point, Blackledge was able to walk through it and break free to reset.
Late in the frame, Blackledge was able to drag the action onto the canvas. However, Lutz didn’t stay there long, rising to his feet, where the hand-to-hand battle continued just before the bell, when both punches closed.
Blackledge had to go through a stiff knee to stall early in the third, but once the action moved onto the canvas, it was Lutz who scored the dominant spot as he landed in lateral control. Blackledge managed to put his feet on the cage and tried to break free, but Lutz was very heavy at the top and maintained firm control. It wasn’t the most action-packed streak, but it was firm control, and Lutz used it to cash a winning decision, 30-27 on all three cards, as well as a UFC contract.
In the first fight of the night, flyweight Victoria Leonardo (8-2) suffered damage along the way, but ultimately scored a second round TKO over previously undefeated Chelsea Hackett (3-1-1).
Hackett opened the contest with several impressive front kicks and a few slap kicks to the leg. Leonardo eventually managed to get past stiff hitting to clinch and trip the action onto the canvas, where she immediately started hitting from first position. Hackett crawled back to his feet late in the frame, where the two traded strikes until the end.
Power strikes flowed freely to open the second, too, with Hackett favoring his slick kicking game and Leonardo showing strong, tight, ranged punches. Hackett responded with his own punches and landed neat, clearly causing his opponent to falter. However, Leonardo wisely closed the distance to slow things down and was finally able to get the action on the canvas, where she completely grabbed the momentum by moving up and hitting. Hackett did his best to bounce and roll, but eventually succumbed to the non-stop barrage of punches. Referee Marc Goddard canceled it at 4:41 of the second frame.
The performance was enough to earn Leonardo a UFC contract.
