In total, four Kmart stores in mid-Michigan are expected to close by the end of the year.

Larry Costello, director of public relations for Sears and Kmart, told MLive-The Flint Journal: "After careful consideration, we made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Kmart stores in Belleville, Hastings, Menominee, Midland, Clio, Grayling, Oscoda and Marine City, Michigan. "

Clearance sales are expected to begin in mid-September and a store closure plan is expected to be in place by mid-December, he added.

When the canton of Vienna is closed, there will be no more Kmart stores in Genesee County.

Costello declined to comment on the number of employees who will be affected by the closures.

This announcement marks the closure of the last Kmart stores in the area – including Burton, Flint, Grand Blanc, Fenton and Flint Township – since 2012.

Some of the closed stores have been put back into service.

Two companies – Family Farm & Home, KFC Restaurant and Dollar Tree – now occupy portions of the 106,000 square foot Burton Kmart store and the adjacent parking lot along North Belsay Road.

A U-Haul facility was approved in August 2018 at the former Kmart store located near Miller Road in Flint Township.

In Fenton, a TJ Maxx recently moved from Eastridge Commons Place near the intersection of Lapeer and Center roads to Flint to the former Kmart store located in Silver Lake Village off Silver Parkway, which closed in 2016

Andrew Mastrangelo, Media Relations Manager for T.J. Maxx, previously declared the new Fenton T.J. The Maxx store will employ approximately 65 full-time and part-time associates.

Flint T.J's 35 employees Maxx stores – including directors and associates – were all offered the opportunity to work in the Fenton store, said Mastrangelo.

Petco, Five Below and Michaels occupy the retail space in Fenton, redeveloped by K2 Retail Construction Services, based in Wixom.
