Fox News Sunday Presenter Chris Wallace confronted House Minority Whip representative Steve Scalise about former President Donald Trump’s allegation of baseless electoral fraud, asking him if it “undermines American democracy.”
Trump and many of his Conservative allies continue to make baseless allegations that the 2020 election was “rigged” or “stolen” in favor of President Joe Biden. Despite multiple audits and court challenges, no evidence has been presented to support this extraordinary claim.
Wallace lobbied Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, on his views regarding the former president’s false allegation in an interview on Sunday.
“There were clearly irregularities in the last election. There were irregularities in every election, but I want to ask you a specific question,” Wallace told Scalise. “Do you think the 2020 election was ‘stolen’ from Donald Trump? And by continuing to make that accusation… do you think it hurts, undermines American democracy?” He asked.

Scalise sidestepped the question, saying “a number of states” did not follow local laws governing elections. But Wallace intervened, pointing out that the states “all certified” the election results. The GOP congressman then suggested that states had not followed the Constitution, saying he hoped “we would go back to what the Constitution says.”
“So, do you think the election was stolen?” Wallace asked again.
“What I said was that there are states that have not followed their legislative rules,” Scalise replied.
Wallace then pointed out that many supporters of the former president have been misled into believing that Biden is not the legitimate president. He pointed to Trump supporters at a rally in Iowa on Saturday who said, “Joe Biden is not my president, Donald Trump is my president.”
“Do you think the election was stolen or not? Wallace asked again. “I understand that you think there were irregularities, that there were things that need to be corrected. Do you think the election was stolen? “
Scalise returned to the same topic of discussion, arguing that some states had not followed their election laws. He went on to criticize people for opposing electoral law changes pushed by Republican legislatures in conservative states.
News week contacted Scalise’s press secretary for further comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
More than 140 Republican lawmakers in Congress have voted against certification of the votes of the Biden Electoral College in Pennsylvania and / or Arizona. Scalise, the second-most senior House leader, was among those GOP lawmakers.
Trump has rallied his supporters to his false claims about the 2020 election. However, dozens of election lawsuits filed by Trump and his allies have failed in state and federal courts. Even judges appointed by Trump and other Republicans have dismissed the allegations. Meanwhile, audits and recounts in key battlefield states, including places where the election was overseen by pro-Trump Republicans, reaffirmed Biden’s victory.
Despite the lack of compelling evidence to corroborate the claim, a majority of Republicans appear to believe Trump’s claim. A poll released by Yahoo News / YouGov in early August showed that two-thirds (66%) of GOP voters believe the election was rigged or stolen from Trump. Only 18% said Biden won fairly.
