Charles Leclerc showed the pace of Ferrari in FP3 Monaco and, fortunately, he did nothing after being investigated for violation of the rules of the VSC.

The F1 drivers had a busy start to the training session, as with a 40% chance of rain during the session, the dry runway time was potentially limited.

Lewis Hamilton was one of the pilots who took the time to venture out of the pits. While his rivals were heading outside, Mercedes was working hard to change the configuration of his W10 while the Brit watched the situation.

George Russell was the first to make a timed lap, a 1:17 for the Williams rookie.

The time in P1 fell quickly with Daniel Ricciardo, Alexander Albon and Leclerc. And then came Mercedes.

Valtteri Bottas clocked the fastest time with a time of 1: 12.764, 10 minutes after the start of the session.

Bottas improved to 1: 12.238 while Hamilton was second, 0.2s down. He was fastest in the first two sectors but lost time in the third.

As we have often seen, Sainte-Dévote was the scene of the first crash of the session: it was Sebastian Vettel.

He blocked the front left and smashed the nose first in the barrier. His Ferrari lost his front wing.

The virtual safety car made a brief appearance while the commissaires removed the Ferrari in distress.

That being done, the remaining 19 pilots were back in action with Hamilton setting a 1: 12.034 to go into P1 before Bottas answered with a 1: 11.835.

Red Bull joined the mix while Max Verstappen took third place, Pierre Gasly took fifth place behind Leclerc.

Ferrari's problems continued when the race officials announced that Leclerc was under investigation for infraction during the VSC period – the VSC being absent for the crash of his teammate.

Leclerc put his problems – and the fall potential of the grid that could result from the investigation – aside and was fastest with a 1: 11.265.

After meeting the stewards 15 minutes after the meeting, he has just received a reprimand.

Bottas increased his pace but remained second at 0.053 seconds, while Hamilton also progressed faster but remained third.

Lance Stroll added his name to the list of those who made a mistake in Ste Devote. His locking was earlier than Vettel had meant, so he could line the corner in a straight line and take the exit route instead of the barrier.

Verstappen finished fourth for the FP3, finishing ahead of Gasly, Antonio Giovinazzi, Daniil Kvyat and Kevin Magnussen.

Kimi Raikkonen and Albon complete the top ten.

Williams was again the slowest of all with Robert Kubica 0.2 seconds behind Russell.
