Fran Drescher wins bitter SAG-AFTRA elections

The surprisingly heated, and verbally contentious, elections for the management of SAG-AFTRA – the union to which just about every actor who works in Hollywood belongs – came to their optimistic conclusion this weekend, as Fran Drescher emerged bloodstained and triumphant, wearing the ( metaphorically) Enemy Election Leader Matthew Modine in his hands.

That is to say: Drescher is now the head of SAG-AFTRA, after what was, in everyone’s opinion, a extremely bitter election, an election that has seen accusations of everything from support for the Jan. 6 uprising to sympathy for the NXIVM cult, tossed about between rivals. Drescher was the heir apparent, being part of the Unite For Strength party / platform that has been running things at SAG-AFTRA in recent years, while Modine represented rival MembershipFirst. (God, those names.)

But all is not easy for Drescher’s rise to an impeccably dressed power: his running mate, Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp, did not wins his election as secretary-treasurer, which instead goes to Modine’s ally, Joely Fisher. And although this may simply mean that some sort of compromise position will eventually emerge from all the arguments., it seems just as likely that we’re about to engage in some real Jefferson-Burr-type shit, and in a few years, we’ll be writing an article about Joely Fisher attempting to become Emperor of Mexico.

In the short term, however, both sides of the issue (which represent, in very general terms, ‘Let’s keep doing what we’ve done’ and ‘Let’s change everything’, because politics) are likely to have to find a way to work. together under the direction of Drescher. And who can say she can’t make it? She got style, she got flair, she only got, like, a tweet about how 5G cellular signals cause the coronavirus… This is how she became the President-elect of SAG-AFTRA.
