Apple will hardly be able to rely on the 4G speeds of its iPhone X to justify its price. Ookla relied on user-initiated throughput testing through its speed test app to compare the connection speed of several high-end smartphones. Data show that the Samsung Galaxy S9 displays a average download speed of 38.9 Mbit / s, out of approximately 102,000 tests performed in the last three months. The S9 +, reaches 38.4 Mbit / s, according to a sample of about 169 000 connections. For comparison, the iPhone X reaches only 29.7 Mbit / s, on a base of 603 000 tests. The iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 stand at 29.4 Mbit / s and 28.6 Mbit / s respectively. The Google Pixel 2XL reaches 33.9 Mbit / s and Pixel 2 the 34.4 Mbit / s. The gap is noticeable between the latest iPhone and the best Android smartphones. And it could widen even further in the future with the arrival of 5G and the delay taken by Apple on this ground.
Qualcomm modem chip more efficient
The bitrate depends partly on the state of the operator network, which explains that the results of the iPhone vary depending on whether the subscriber is at Verizon or Sprint, for example. But the most important factors remain the device software and the modem chip. This last point has become highly sensitive since Qualcomm and Apple compete in court proceedings.
