Road users have not yet made the new 80 km / h limit. A month after the implementation of this controversial measure on secondary roads, some prefectures draw an unequivocal badessment: radars flash much more.

In the Var, twice as many flashes

This is particularly the case in the Var. In an interview with the daily Var-Matin the prefect Jean-Luc Videlaine indicates indeed that "the seven automatic radars positioned on the roads now limited to 80 km / h have been reprogrammed and that they flash more than 'before: since implementation, there are even more than twice as many flashes'.

A trend that seems to be quite global according to Emmanuel Barbe, interministerial delegate for road safety. "The fixed speed cameras positioned on roads at 80 km / h flash twice as much as before," he says in Ouest-France .

Other prefectures unveiled the figures for July. In Haute-Loire, the number of flashes has also increased since July 1st. According to figures released, the 28 radars of the department had flashed 1172 motorists between June 25 and July 1. A figure that rose to 3314 flashes between 16 and 22 July.

End of the tolerance in August

Contacted by the Express, the Directorate of Road Safety says it does not yet hold global data. However, "this increase in the number of flashes corresponds to a period when users have to get used to this drop in speed," she says.

And while the police deployed on the roads have been tolerant throughout the month of July, it will not be the case for the month of August, for its part announced Emmanuel Barbe in Ouest-France .

Especially as the number of road deaths increases in summer. In July 2017, 346 people lost their lives in car accidents. This limitation of the speed to 80 km / h aims to reduce the risk of accidents. "In June, there were 30 fewer deaths than in June 2017. Because we sensitized motorists to 80 km / h," said Emmanuel Barbe.

Road safety will soon make the mortality figures for July. They will be the first since the introduction of this measure.
