A transmission technology that will soon be a thing of the past since it will be replaced by the Internet Protocol (IP).
A change that will be made gradually since Orange will stop opening new lines via this type of transmission from November 15, 2018. At the same time, existing RTC lines will be gradually replaced according to a specific schedule. The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP) unveiled Friday, the first areas that will be impacted by 2023, among them, 157 municipalities of Haute-Loire.
What is the RTC?
Deployed in the years 1970-80, the switched telephone network is a type of transmission still used by 9 million French. In concrete terms, if your phone is plugged directly into the wall jack of your home, you are using this technology.
Why is he abandoned?

Who is concerned ?
In Auvergne, no more inhabitants will be able to open a new fixed telephony line via the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). "From November 15, Orange will stop marketing new RTC lines, says Valérie Thérond. This concerns people who move or those who want to open new lines. For others, who are currently in RTC, they can continue for a while. Are not concerned those who use an internet box.
Haute-Loire first?
Remains still the 180,000 Auvergnats who currently use this network. All lines will be gradually replaced by 2030 and some people will be forced to switch to IP technology if they want to continue using a landline.
The Haute-Loire will open the ball in Auvergne since 157 municipalities of the center and the east of the department were chosen, this Friday, by the Authority of regulation of the electronic communications and posts (Arcep), to carry out their migration before October 26, 2023. The detail here!
What is the Internet Protocol (IP)?
It is a data transmission technology used around the world. "Orange has been using this technology since 2004," says Valérie Thérond. IP has become the standard of the market since 11 million French uses it today. "
Specifically, the phone is no longer directly connected to the phone jack but to a box itself connected to the socket. This is not an internet box and it will not be necessary to subscribe to an internet package to have the landline.
How will the change happen?
Orange is committed to informing those concerned and offering them alternatives. Concretely, the operator undertakes to make available free of charge a box that they will have to plug into their wall socket. Their phone number will not change.
"The fixed IP offer is at the same price as RTC," says Valérie Thérond. We send the case and the person connects. The change in technology is transparent to the person who has RTC today. What is planned to accompany users towards this change?
