Airbus has a "basic scenario" that there will be "no agreement" on the exit of Britain from the European Union while the government of Theresa May faces a political storm in London because of the project concluded with Brussels, writes the European aircraft manufacturer in a note addressed to his staff.
The aerospace and defense group continues to consider a messy Brexit because Theresa May may have to fight to get his text adopted by British MPs. Several of his ministers have resigned and conservative Eurosceptic MPs have launched a procedure for a vote of no confidence.
"The draft agreement is certainly encouraging but we must remember that it is subject to Parliament's approval," writes the head of the Airbus Brexit Task Force in the memo to the staff, which Reuters was able to to consult. "For teams working on Brexit preparation, we need to stay focused and continue working urgently on a baseline scenario without any agreement."
An Airbus spokesman declined to comment on the note but told Reuters: "The situation remains uncertain, so we need to continue planning and implementing mitigation measures," adding that group had not changed since June.
Airbus, which employs 14,000 people in Britain, said in June that a "no agreement" Brexit would cost it billions of euros and force it to reconsider its investments and "long-term presence" in the country. Tom Enders, the Airbus executive chairman, pleaded on Thursday to "clear the uncertainties as soon as possible".
