A 64-year-old cyclist died after heavy thunderstorms in southwestern France, while 800 homes in the Charente were damaged.
The violent thunderstorms that fell on Wednesday, July 4, in several departments of New Aquitaine killed a badagenarian in Corrèze and caused significant damage in the Charente.
In the department of Corrèze, placed in orange vigilance in the morning, a 64-year-old cyclist from Loire-Atlantique died at Objat from a "cardiopulmonary arrest" after having been injured by the fall of a tree, reported firefighters. The accident caused by violent storms, accompanied by strong winds, which struck the department in the afternoon, occurred in a park where this badagenarian participated in a gathering of cyclo-tourism.
In Charente, also in vigilance orange, violent hailstorms, caused significant material damage, particularly in the areas of La Rochefoucauld and Chabanais, said the prefecture in a statement in the early evening.

Dozens of victims were sheltered for the night in gymnasiums. Approximately 200 firefighters were engaged for a total of 370 interventions, throughout the department of Charente.
Corrèze and Charente were among the 31 departments of southern and central France placed on alert orange Wednesday by Weather -France because of the risk of violent thunderstorms from the afternoon.
Wednesday at midnight, only two departments, Nièvre and Saône-et-Loire, were kept in orange alert for risks of rain and flood. "The storm activity has clearly diminished" according to Meteo France.
